Movie Review: Take Me Home Tonight (2011)

It's an interesting concept to make an '80s teen sex comedy in 2011 (or a few years earlier since the film's release was delayed) and Take Me Home Tonight manages to touch upon some of the magic of those films while also retaining modernistic comedy elements. The creators have stated that they wanted to make a movie that feels like it was made in the '80s rather than just parodying the decade, but the result shifts back and forth between accomplishing that goal and venturing towards the outlandish antics of present day gross-out teen comedies. The R rating allows for more colorful dialogue, a little nudity and plenty of drug use, but the most satisfyingly humorous moments don't involve sex, drugs, or its '80s setting. Visually (and certainly musically) the best of the '80s is there, but strangely the film would have been as effective set in any era.
Though Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) now works at a Suncoast Video after graduating from MIT and has no prospects on his future career, his greatest regret is never obtaining the phone number of his unrequited high school crush Tori Frederking (Teresa Palmer). When a chance meeting with his dream girl allows him to join her at Kyle Masterson's (Chris Pratt) legendary Labor Day weekend party, Matt, his best friend Barry (Dan Fogler), and his twin sister Wendy (Anna Faris), navigate the rocky revelations of burgeoning adulthood through a night of wild partying, self reflection, and second chances.
Master of the '80s teen comedy, John Hughes, often employed a tactic where a moment of hilarity emerged after reflecting on the more serious revelations of growing up. Take Me Home Tonight uses an antithetical approach - bouts of comedy are capped with the somber musings of regrets and failures. This often leaves a bitter taste to the conclusion of each event no matter how comically it started and forces the viewer to reminisce on the solemnity. As a result the comedy acquires a much darker feel than it actually deserves, which perhaps accurately resonates with the seriousness of cocaine use and lying to women, but detracts from the laugh-out-loud appeal.
A few references to Hughes' work and some paralleling ideas surface in Take Me Home Tonight, but the film can't quite grasp the charm and sincerity of its authentic predecessors. It does, however, still manage to feature a classic tale of a teenager searching for his dream girl and accompanies this with clever bits of comedy and the scene-stealing over-the-top exploits of funnyman Dan Fogler.

What Is Online Audio Mastering?

Over the last 10 years the music industry has changed significantly. One of the biggest changes has been the lower budgets that are available to musicians and record labels for the costs involved in releasing a body of work. As such, most areas of recording and mixing have been hit financially with the closure of some of the worlds greatest recording and mixing facilities. These budget cuts have affected almost all areas of music production and some of the models under which these business operate have also adapted. The internet has allowed such production facilities to change their methods of providing services to musicians and record labels.
Mastering is a procedure at the end of the music production process. These days it is used by independent musicians and record labels. After music has been mixed the final stage will be mastering. Mastering used to be a very expensive procedure and would be attended by the producer, musicians and a record label contact. Since the advent of the internet many studios now offer online mastering. The pricing for these services is generally much lower even though the same high quality audio processing equipment is used.
The process involves critical listening and final tweaking of the audio, this can include compression, equalization, stereo width manipulation and if required final limiting to bring up the perceived volume of the music. The goal of mastering is to make sure that the frequency response of the music is tailored on an accurate system making sure it translates as best as it can across all the playback systems it might meet. These systems could be radio stations, MP3 players, hi-fi systems, laptops and club playback systems. It is also an important stage of quality control where any pops, clicks and glitches can be removed before the final music makes it to the listeners. Finally the music is committed to a high quality disk (CD-R pre-master) ready for duplication or replication. Sadly it is easy for an inexperienced engineer to set up a website and purport to be a mastering engineer so do choose the studio with some diligence. Online mastering should be chosen with care as there are many operators who may not be as well equipped as they suggest. Investigate the following: engineer history and experience, check the photo's of the studio and check to see the studios recent clients list. In addition some online mastering studios will provide a free preview, this is often time permitting. This should ensure that you will make the right choice when the time comes to finalize your music CD or files before they are released.

Musical Experimentation Gave Rockabilly Music Its Unique Sound

Rockabilly music should maybe have never come into existence. After all, the music is a blend of country, blues, rhythm and blues, and gospel styles all mashed together to create a unique sound. And who would have ever thought to combine these varied styles, let alone thought that the resulting music might actually become popular and eventually be responsible for millions of record sales? Well, luckily for rockabilly and rock and roll fans, there were people back in the 1950s who were willing to do just that type of experimentation and they've left us a wonderfully rich musical legacy!
As it turns out, there were actually quite a number of people experimenting with the music that eventually formed into rockabilly. Black R&B artists had been performing and recording increasingly rocked-up songs that were coming very close to the rockabilly sound even back into the 1940s. These players were experimenting with guitar sounds and styles, a much more aggressive drumming style, and the slap-bass style that has become so ubiquitous with rockabilly music.
As ahead of their time as these musicians might have been, it also took white musicians willing to experiment to move the music forward. In those times of racial discrimination in the American South, these black musicians were not able to break their music into the wider and more lucrative white radio markets that would have brought them more success and money. Most stations operated by whites wouldn't play this "race" music, no matter how good it was.
But by the late 1940s, white musicians were also starting to create music that foreshadowed rock and roll. Some people argue that The Maddox Brothers and Rose were creating rockabilly music even before the 50s decade began. Indeed, Rose Maddox went on to record some great rockabilly tracks after the style had really caught on.
Bill Haley and His Comets, while not strictly rockabilly, were also breaking his new R&B-influenced style to the American listening public in the early 50s. But it took a visionary independent record label owner and three inventive musicians named Bill Black, Scotty Moore, and Elvis Presley to really break rockabilly music into the musical mainstream.
Sam Phillips started the Sun Record label in Memphis, Tennessee in order to release the music he'd been recording in this studio since 1950. At first the music he recorded was mostly blues played by black performers. Phillips, who was white, was willing to experiment with not only recording techniques, but also with the idea of a white man in the deep south running a business that treated black musicians fairly and honestly. But he was also on the lookout for a white artist with a sound like the black artists had.
He found that one day when one of his newly signed musicians, Elvis, started letting off some steam during a session by singing a wild version of the R&B song "That's All Right". Phillips loved what he heard when Moore and Black joined in with Presley and they ended up recording the first commercially successful rockabilly tracks--another bold experiment. Of course, the experiment obviously paid off, Elvis rocketed up the charts to superstardom, and rock and roll was here to stay!
