Devil Review

Devil is like an extra long episode of The Twilight Zone. Imagine, if you will, five strangers stuck inside of a broken-down elevator. Whenever the lights go out in the elevator, something sinister happens. A detective on the outside is trying desperately to set them free and figure out which one is the killer. One of the security guards who operates the security camera inside of the elevator begins to believe a tale that he was told as a child: that the devil is amongst them.
M. Night Shyamalan, praised for The Sixth Sense and ridiculed for The Last Airbender, wrote the story that Devil is based on and was also a producer. John Erick Dowdle, known for the horror remake Quarantine, directed. The cast is a mesh of virtual unknowns without a real standout in the bunch.
Devil plays on a number of fears. The thought of being stuck in a confined space, such as an elevator, with other people is unnerving to most. During the movie, the audience is pretty much stuck in the elevator with these people and the claustrophobic atmosphere is evident. Being trapped in an elevator is bad enough, but when people start to die, everyone turns against each other. It suddenly becomes a witch-hunt with everyone accusing the others of being to blame.
Then, of course, there's the small matter of being trapped with the devil. This should be a terrifying experience, one that leaves us shaken long after we finished watching it. Unfortunately, this does not happen. There is some violence with some blood, but these moments happen very quickly. This movie could have done so much more with this concept, but with its semi-family friendly PG-13 rating, it can only do so much.
Ultimately  feels more like a B-movie than anything else. The dialogue can be forced and generic at times. The film has a particularly low-budget feel to it, but many films that take place in one setting are typically viewed as low-budget. It's not a terrible movie, but it's not terrifying either. Definitely unsettling, though. For those expecting an M. Night Shyamalan twist, prepare to be disappointed. There's a little something at the end that's a bit of a surprise, but not a huge plot twist. This film is meant to be the first installment of a trilogy called Night Chronicles; each one is to have a different director and will be based on one of Shyamalan's stories. No word on what the next story will be. Hopefully the next film will be scarier, and rated R.

Well that's how Katie Barnett, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota used to think!! Ms. Barnett, the very first monthly winner of the 2B Awards, was awarded $1,000 dollars for receiving the most votes in a monthly online talent competition.
Ms. Barnett, a 29-year-old mother could hardly believe that she had won! "I entered the competition because I love to sing," said Barnett, "I had no idea or ever even gave it a thought that I might win!"
Barnett won the $1,000 dollar award and now her video qualifies for the 2B Awards Finals, along with other upcoming monthly winners!
Inner self confidence is truly needed to perform like a Rock star! Without it no matter how beautiful you are or how well you sing, you could very well be overlooked.

They ran an experiment in which they hired one actress to stand at the side of the road by her supposedly stalled car.
Passing cars and trucks came to a screeching halt. Men dangerously ran across four lanes of a busy highway to help the damsel in distress! Several men were fighting over which one would be lucky enough to help her!
In the next segment a different actress with the same clothes, same car stood by the same roadside, but this actress was judged to be less attractive. Just a few cars slowed down and after the drivers checked her out, they sped on. What was the difference? Well the first actress she threw her shoulders back, smiled at the passing cars. She looked happy, fun-loving and confident! The other actress leaned against her car with a defeated expression on her face. She looked down at the ground. She crossed her arms in front of her chest. She looked unhappy, grumpy, thus, homely.

Christian Wolff Concert Review 4-7-11 at UVA

Christian Wolff is an experimental and classical music composer who was largely self-taught in his musical education. This being said, there are relatively few "traditional" compositional paradigms which he adheres to; creating both a unique and jarring listening experience for the audience. Immediately upon the outset of the concert, his novel approach is blatantly obvious with songs that provide the performer an incredible amount of freedom - so much to the point that not any two interpretations of the same piece are performed, or heard for that matter, in the same way. A manner to approach the music in, from the perspective of a nubile experimental music listener (such as I am), would be strictly avant-garde. As with any pioneering music composer, the music has an exploratory tone to it; there is a palpable pushing and feeling around for boundaries that do not exist.
Periods of silence marked by brief outbursts, both identifiable in source and otherwise, followed by more traditional classical feeling sounds, are all common in the work of Wolff. Certain compositions, such as Play (1968) or Stones (1968) are completely unstructured, providing both performers and listeners with an abundance of freedom that can be overwhelming to those who have little experience with the world of early experimental music. At the same time, there is, paradoxically enough, a very natural feel to many of the compositions that is somewhat soothing to the audience, despite the abruptness of the pieces.
Although what I have been saying about the concert appears to go back and forth between the extremes of musically jarring and oddly comfortable, these, it appears, are entirely appropriate sensation combinations when listening to experimental compositions. In fact, there is an air uncertainty about the performers, looking about from one to another, which helps put the audience at ease with their own internal clashing of feelings and interpretations about the compositions.
The influence of his contemporaries is apparent in his compositions. The open form of Paris (1968) seems to be inspired by Earle Brown. The freely floating, unfocused, and asymmetric rhythms of Morton Feldman as appear to have entered Wolff's compositions. In all of Wolff's works, the autonomy of interpretation associated with John Cage could be felt along with other avant-garde influences from the experimental New York School, of which they all were an integral part.
Influences from abroad are also apparent, as Wolff borrows from the electroacoustic styling of the French based GRM. More specifically, Play (1968) had the influence of Pierre Schaeffer and musique concrete - as the sound was based off many unidentifiable, nontraditional "instruments" and the piece was devoid of any traditional musical elements. Despite the fact that Wolff is not associated with the minimalist musical movement, I could not help but hear some elements of the movement in his music - silence, brevity, directionless or non-goal driven, conceptual aspects. Also, as a matter of statement, although electronic aspects are frequent in experimental pieces, there was a marked absence of those sounds at this concert.

Beatles Used Rockabilly To Become The Successors To The King's Throne

No one argues that Elvis remains the King of Rock and Roll. But there should also be no argument that sometime around the mid 1960s the King stepped down from actively presiding over the throne. As Elvis got bogged down in a series of increasingly meaningless movies and their often meaningless soundtracks, other acts were banging on the castle gates demanding their shot at rock and roll royalty. Of course, it was the Beatles who ascended and ruled the rock and roll kingdom for the remainder of the 1960s. But the Beatles didn't make it to their lofty heights without help from rockabilly music and a great debt owed to the King!
The Beatles were just one of hundreds of second-generation rock bands that drew heavily upon the influence of the rockabilly greats that they'd listened to while growing up in the 1950s. George Harrison in particular was influenced to a huge extent by the guitar playing of Carl Perkins and others. Listen to the solos in those early Beatles songs and you'll hear many of Perkins' licks throughout. Even the Beatles choice of guitars was rockabilly influenced as they tended to use hollow-bodied instruments that evoked the memory of the hollow-bodied guitars that Eddie Cochran, Scotty Moore, and many other rockabilly guitarists favored.
The Fab Four included countless rockabilly and early rock and roll numbers in their live stage shows, particularly before they achieved their massive fame. And several rockabilly tunes made it onto some of their early albums. For instance on the American release, Beatles For Sale, the band included two Carl Perkins rockabilly tunes and in both cases they stayed very true to the original rockabilly presentation of the songs. "Honey Don't" was the B side to Perkins' seminal Sum Records release "Blue Suede Shoes" and the Beatles do a very authentic version of it on the album. The other Perkins song on Beatles For Sale, "Everybody's Tryin' to be my Baby" is a rollicking romp in the classic Perkins tongue-in-cheek style and the Beatles did it up right.
A third Perkins song recorded during the same sessions, "Matchbox," wasn't included on the record but has become a Beatles classic nonetheless. In fact, as a nod to their respect for Carl Perkins, The Beatles recorded more songs written by him than by any other artist (other than themselves.)
The Beatles knew good music when they heard it. They tapped into the joy and energy of rockabilly to craft their own unique style and the rockabilly influence stayed with them throughout their careers. McCartney is still known to throw a rockabilly tune or two into his live shows and Ringo's always good for a hot version of "Honey Don't."
The King never gave up his crown and just because these new Brits hit the scene doesn't mean Elvis just went away. He was still seeing success and came back strong in a 1968 television special. He was and always will be the King. And even though he stepped down from the throne to let the Beatles rule for a while, the "lads from Liverpool" knew their rock and roll heritage. They knew the role that rockabilly had played in their formative years and rather than shy away from it or try to hide it, they embraced it and let it become a major part of the new revolution they were building.
