Brief History of Warner Bros Studios

Warner Bros. Studios is one of the most famous film and television company in the world. You may not realise it but if you have watched TV or films most of your life then you will have grown up with many of the films this production company have brought to us. They brought us some of the earliest cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Sylvester and Tweety. These characters were the start of the animation film world we love and know today.
The name goes back to the four founding Warner brothers, Harry, Jack, Sam and Albert. The three eldest brothers began in the movie theatre business with a movie projector. They showed films in the mining towns of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The first theatre they opened was called the Cascade in 1903 based in Pennsylvania.
The earliest films were made back in the 1910s and 1920's. They have made hundreds of films and in a way helped shape the movie industry we see today. The original studio was built on a plot of farmland in 1926. Soon they built Brownstone Street which was renamed Ashley Boulevard in 2002, and New York Street, which are now two of the oldest and most-used exterior sets. This enabled them to churn out far more movies. By the time the 1930's arrived they were making a lot more films and business was serious booming. They constructed nine new soundstages which are all still in use today.
The 1940's brought us Casablanca and Yankee Doodle Dandy. They also added three more soundstages and an exterior residential set which again is still in use today. The street was used in East of Eden with James Dean and John Wayne in The Shootist.
Their success continued in the 1950's and 60's with hits such as Rebel Without a Cause, My Fair Lady and Bonnie and Clyde. In the 1970's some of their most popular productions include Superman, Every Which Way but Loose Boulevard Nights, and Monty Python's Life of Brian. The 80's brought us more Superman films and the Lethal Weapon and Police Academy films.
In 2001, Warner Bros and their parent company Time Warner Inc. merged with America Online Inc. This made them the world's foremost media and Communications Companies.
Recently they have had great success with the Harry potter movie Franchises which shattered many box office records and launched a cultural phenomenon. Just last year Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 became the biggest opening of all time smashing the box office records. Slumdog Millionaire won eight Academy Awards, seven BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globes. The list of films and awards each film has one is endless.
The future of Warner Bros. Studio looks rosy, it seems whatever they put their hand to they succeed. There will be more box office records broken and awards won. Long may they prosper.

Live Music and Festive Events - Posters

Playing live guitar band-stand music at festive events is one of the numerous ways that you can make money from your music career. Like any other event, unless you put in the needed attention, preparation and resources, you will not make it. One of the activities involved here is how to invite people to the function. For want of time and elaboration, I will limit myself to one of the means used to invite spectators and this is posters. The features of a good poster are as mentioned below:
The title of the poster: This must convey, as much as possible, to the reader what the whole activity is about. In our case where we are concerned about playing live guitar band stand music at festive events, the name of the popular guitar band must be mentioned in the title. A catchy one like this will do: "A Night With The Beatles On Christmas Eve" This must be boldly written with a nice font.
After this comes short sentences, of two or three, giving a graphic description of what is at stake on the day in question.
Next comes the venue. Care must be taken when choosing the venue. The expected number should influence the space available. It must also be an easily accessible and convenient place. The venue must be a popular place known to many people and must also be traced with less difficulty if there should be any. Where it is not popular more should be said about the location.
The date, time, and duration of the activity must be expressly written. For example: "the function starts at 8pm till day break" The poster must come out as early as possible to make people adjust their time schedules.
Next must be assurances that it is going to be great and promise them of the presence of a popular artist in the band. Some gatherings also go with special attire and must be mentioned if necessary.
Last but not the least is the rate. For good ones, they are categorized for children, adults, and partners. The reason for raising the gate fees is also important. Those which work well are for charities.
Guitar players can really make good money through the numerous festivals that abound all over the world. This calls for more hands on deck for the guitar playing profession as the market is huge and diverse.

Music Spotlight: Hayes Carll "KMAG YOYO and Other American Stories"

Hayes Carll is a real gem on the Texas music scene. He has the a voice that reminds me sometimes of Steve Earle and at other times of Hank Williams Sr. And accessibility from your Garth Brooks fans to hipster college kids. This album is Texas through and through, but stands out with it's sad, unique and often funny lyrics. Carll had some success on the Americana scene in 2008 with the song "She Left me for Jesus" (which is funny as hell, no pun intended), but I knew almost nothing about Carll until a few months when a friend introduced me to his stuff, and within the next few weeks I saw him on Austin City Limits and then Jay Leno playing the song "KMAG YOYO" (which stands for 'Kiss my ass guys, you're on your own"). I was sold on that song right then, so I bought the whole album (KMAG YOYO & Other American Stories) last week and it's been on constant circulation since.
The first time I listened to the album all the way through, sans the songs "Stomp and Holler" and "KMAG YOYO", I was a little bored with the album as a whole. But recalling my first listen to The National's "High Violet", (which almost put me to sleep, but every listen after it developed and revealed itself more and more, and now is one of my favorite records) I decided to give "KMAG YOYO" another shot, and I am glad I did. On that second listen the tracks "Another Like You" and "Grateful for Christmas" jumped out at me and sucked me into the stories Carll was singing. Upon each listen another song or two sticks with me when something new or funny reveals itself in the songwriting.
Hayes Carll is Americana through and through. The sound of this album would be ideally enjoyed driving through east Texas with all the windows down. The electric guitar reminds me of a Drive-By Truckers album on songs like "KMAG YOYO" and "Stomp and Holler" while the piano on "Hide Me" could fit in on a Tom Waits album, and when the choir in the background starts humming, expect goosebumps. "Hard Out Here" could be played on the jukebox at a honkey tonk and fit in with that lonesome moan of the slide guitar and the line "I used to have a heart but the highway took it" swaying with a jingle jangle reminiscent of Dylan's "Rainy Day Women 12 & 35″.
The songs are all good, but sometimes they go on just a little too long. "Chances Are" is a "sad country song" in every sense of the word and very upfront, about 2 minutes in to that song my mind starts to wander a little. The same is true with "Grand Parade", not bad by any stretch, just sort of one-dimensional. But maybe I just haven't listened to the album enough yet. Or it could be that there are just songs on "KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories) that are SO excellent that decent songs lose their luster when places right next to them. Either way, they don't detract from the album as a whole.
Of the excellent songs on the album, the masterpiece is the song "KMAG YOYO". It's a funny, surreal story about a young solider in Afghanistan and his unlikely journey through the military and U.S. government. I laugh out loud a bit every time I hear "slippin' out the back door, gonna join the peace core, tell me I'm a hero so someone else can fight this war". It's bitingly ironic and political, Carll brilliantly lets his sense of humor make a very serious point about the war in Afghanistan. It's pure gold
If you take one thing away from this review, I hope it is: "KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories)" is worth your time and money (don't illegally download, that is just sleazy). It's early in the year, but as of March 22, "KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories)" is one of the best albums of the year, as far as this humble blogger is concerned.
