Movie Review: I Am Number Four (2011)

If you've enjoyed a steady diet of Twilight films, superhero movies, and sci-fi television shows, you might like I Am Number Four. But probably not. The film, based on the young-adult novel of the same name, derives almost its entirety from other related materials, leaving individuality a permanently absent entity. The most disconcerting problem is that Twilight does the high-school romances better, the comic-book movies handle the action with more finesse and the television shows contain fewer cardboard characters. If this is number four, I'm just thankful we didn't have to wallow through one, two, and three.
After their homeworld of Lorien is besieged by the Mogadorians, a ruthless race of alien intruders, only nine gifted youngsters escape to Earth and await their destiny. John (Alex Pettyfer) is one such survivor, who, along with his guardian Henri (Timothy Olyphant), must constantly stay on the run to avoid being found by the Mogadorians. After learning of the assassination of another Lorien, John and Henri head to Paradise, Ohio where they hope to lay low and discover a way to make contact with their remaining allies. When John falls in love with Sarah (Dianna Agron), a pretty photographer at his high school, he decides to stay and fight rather than continue running - a decision that will pit him against a relentless team of brutal alien executioners.
Sometimes, (though rarely) mediocre dialogue can be forgiven in the presence of great action. Unfortunately, I Am Number Four has neither. The direction of conversation, if not the actual exchanges, can probably be guessed before anyone has spoken and the revelations often rival those found in an episode of Scooby-Doo. The dialogue drifts into extremely awkward territory on a number of occasions and can't even grasp realism when the conversations are supposed to be maladroit. Friendships, fatherly guidance, antagonistic threats, and confessions of love never felt so lame.
Perhaps even rarer yet, humdrum dialogue can be dismissed when uttered by intriguing characters and inspiring demeanors. Still nothing here. In John's defense, he is supposed to be trying to blend in and become invisible. He succeeds, but that does the audience the disservice. Sarah lends an arguably pretty face, but certainly no more, and Timothy Olyphant's Henri tries ever so hard but can't overcome the tedium of the script. The otherworldly villains are perhaps the most cringe-worthy, spitting broken English over harsh alien speech and committing the cardinal sin of talking too much before killing their victims.
A few interesting shots during combat do make an appearance, though their ingenuity quickly vanishes beneath the shoddy special effects and the behemoth beasts that look to be the lovechild of a flying squirrel and the Cloverfield monster. If inexplicably powerful teenagers, giant sugar glider-creatures, and hokey glowing flashlight hands are your cup of tea, this one's for you.

Movie Review: Limitless (2011)

Most viewers will go into Limitless with low expectations, thanks to a mediocre trailer and a cast of second-tier regulars. This works to a great advantage, since the film actually possesses a unique plot, fascinating concepts and genuine thrills. There's also a lot of humor mixed into the graveness, lightening the mood for the more shocking material and creating a sense of fun - it's also difficult to take anything Bradley Cooper does too seriously.
Edward Morra (Bradley Cooper) is a failing writer, struggling to type the first sentence of the book he's already taken an advance to pen, frequently turning to booze for inspiration. When he happens upon the brother of his ex-wife, Vernon (Johnny Whitworth), a well-dressed drug dealer convinced that he's a successful businessman, Eddie is given a clear pill known as NZT that promises to expand the usage of the brain from the standard 20% to a whopping 100%. Upon downing the drug, Eddie is suddenly shot with an unprecedented surge of motivation; he's capable of spouting a sparkling cocktail of useless information (which makes him irresistible to the ladies), recalling everything he's ever seen or heard in a remarkably organized manner, learning languages just by listening to people speak, and finishing his novel in a few days.
He returns to Vernon for more of the miracle drug and is able to secure a large bag. It's a limited supply, but enough to boost his mind into transforming $12,000 into $2 million by playing the stock market. Despite terrifying side effects, which he is eventually forced to control, Eddie is all set to become a very powerful man - if only he can keep a murder charge off the record thanks to gaps in memory, prevent a shady loan shark from killing him, and not run out of NZT while trying to impress the Gordon Gekko of investment bankers, Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro).
Two things make Limitless a lot more entertaining than typical, mindless thrillers: firstly, Eddie's "super powers" aren't actually superhuman, allowing the premise to be much more believable. The fact that it's caused by a drug also dissuades inquiry because it's generally accepted that drugs do crazy things. It's a purely science-fiction idea without the otherworldly disposition of aliens or time travel. His moments of superior intelligence are demonstrated by green-screen work, CGI, a hazy gray world transforming into a vivid golden one, and hyperactive camera tricks. Secondly, our superhero frequently loses his special abilities and must cope in the real world, dealing with adversaries that also don't possess a super weapon or Kryptonite - along with the accompanying downers of addiction and crashing. He's also simply not a clean cut protagonist.
A necessary narration presides over Limitless, smartly filling in what can't be described by actions. The rest is a combination of adventure, suspense, and creatively hilarious violence. The unexpected conclusion might leave you with questions and concerns, but also a certain undeniable degree of satisfaction. If the bewildering nature of the outcome is too much to wrap your head around, just remember that it's only a Bradley Cooper movie.

Music Production Tips: How to Compose Music

Composing music is a completely natural process. It is more about expressing yourself with by using music as a channel to express your creativity. It is not possible to compose by asking for it or listening to the existing one to create a new one.
The moment of inspiration is the time when the gateway for a new composition is opened. In the meantime, all you need will be a pen and a paper. If you already know the notes, you can channelize your feelings to a paper in the form of notes. If you do not know the notes, then you can sing it to save in a sound recorder.
Inspiration, feeling and technically working on it, are the most important elements for producing music. Today the technical rules of composing can be taught in many music academies around the world.
But you will still need the individual inspiration to be able to compose music. Producing music without the inspiration will result with an expressionless sound reaching nowhere. Just like the noise without a message.
One of the most frequently asked question about composing is if it is possible to compose without the knowledge on notation? Yes it is possible to produce music without knowing the notes. Because composing is the result of emotions and feelings. It is possible to apply to a person who knows the notation to get it written with notations. But their number is really low.
Usually the recording devices are the biggest assistant for such composers. The next step will be finding the suitable lyrics for this melody.
The most important aspect of composing is creativity which is related to emotions. When the inspiration comes, you can be in a very inappropriate place to write in notations or even record it. But it grows with you and one day emerges as a musical work both with the lyrics and composition. The notation of this work comes later as a technical aspect.
Music production software helps a lot to make and mix beats online with 1000s of instrumental and sounds to choose from. It is possible to create professional quality beats at home quickly and easily without the need for prior knowledge or education.
Normally learning how to make pro music on your computer would cost you tons of investment. Because you would need expensive equipments which are hard to use since they would require technical music production knowledge.
There is no need for spending thousands and acquiring technical knowledge for music production. By using online software tools to make music, you too can make your own beats easily.

Finding the Best Cheap Acoustic Guitars

Finding the right instrument for you can be a daunting task, especially if it is your first major guitar purchase. You know you want an acoustic guitar, but aren't the only good ones boat loads of money? Are there such things as cheap acoustic guitars that actually sound good? In my experience, whether you are a beginner or seasoned musician, no matter what your skill level, there is always a range of inexpensive to very expensive instruments, and in each part of that spectrum, there are fantastic sounding acoustic guitars.
When searching for your next guitar purchase, you must first ask yourself many questions. The first of which is what style of music are you primarily going to be playing? Obviously if you are planning on playing in a screaming heavy metal band, an acoustic guitar probably isn't your first choice. But even within the lighter genres, there are many styles in which different types of guitars shine better than others. For instance, if your planning on playing soft acoustic rock, such as Dave Mathews band, perhaps an acoustic electric guitar is the right guitar for you. That advantage to this type of guitar is that you can plug in and play amplified for clubs or outdoor amplified gigs. Maybe you are planning on playing jazz or flamenco, or your a finger picker, perhaps classical guitars are more what your in the market for. Cheap acoustic guitars come in all forms, from simple basic acoustic guitars, to the eloquent 12 string guitar, which maybe best used as a rhythm element in a larger group.
Another thing you will want to consider when looking for a solid cheap acoustic guitar, is how the guitar feels and plays. One should never purchase a guitar without first playing it. When you play the guitar, how does it feel? Is the neck too thick, or is it too thin? Is the guitar too heavy? Does it slide off your lap or does it sit just right? Since you will be the one primarily playing this instrument and spending the most time with it, you should make sure you are first comfortable holding and handling it. Most importantly, play the guitar! How does it sound too you? Believe it or not I have played cheap acoustic guitars in the $150 range that I feel sound better to me than ones in the $1,000 range. Every acoustic guitar sounds different, some sound darker or brighter, rounder, or fuller. The guitars sound should fit the style and sound you typically play, and fit in to what kind of sound you are going for. Remember, comfort, tone, and sound are all so key in choosing your instrument, and again, never purchase a guitar without first picking it up, and making sure it feels and sounds just right.
The first thing many look for when selecting an acoustic guitar is the look, or appearance of the guitar. While I do feel this is important, you should be attracted to your instrument and want to be seen playing it, its probably the last thing one should be most concerned about when selecting your guitar. Remember, you should always decide your budget first, and more often than not the most expensive guitars are the prettiest. Look for guitars in your price range, follow your eyes to what attracts you, but remember to trust your ears and your fingers the most.
So lets recap. When searching for a cheap acoustic guitar, first decide your price range. Shop within your budget, look within your budget. Don't get it in your head that you are not going to find a nice guitar under a certain dollar amount. As soon as you set that limitation, you follow in that mindset. Next, pick up the guitar, sit with it stand with it, it should feel just right. Make sure your able to stretch your fingers easily around the neck, it should not be too thick so that it is painful to reach when playing certain chords. Play the guitar, make sure it sounds right and good to you. Make sure the tone of the guitar and the type of the guitar match the style and sound you are looking for. And finally, look at your affordable, great sounding guitar. I am convinced after you do all of these things, you will have found your first cheap acoustic guitar and you will be happy with your purchase.

Pop Music - What Is the Definition?

Trying to fit contemporary music into neat little niches and categories is an almost impossible task. You could argue that some musicians can be clearly defined as being country while others are most certainly rap. However, what about the term "pop music"?
Should you take the time to learn the meaning of the word, you will probably be very surprised. The term pop music according to a number of sources (dictionaries included) defines pop music as being a type of music that has wide appeal. If that were the case then rap, country and rock would all fall into this genre at some point. Many music experts and people directly involved in the industry use the "pop" as a shortened version of the word popular.
If the term pop music is, as many people suggest, interchangeable with the phrase "top 40" then the list would change significantly according to who conducted the poll and the year that it was done. The list would also vary drastically according to region, city and country. The people who were asked to take the poll would certainly cause the poll to change.
A clear example would be to poll 200 people in the city between the ages of 15 and 20 and ask them what their top five favorite songs were. If you asked 200 people living in the same city, the same question, but they were all between the age of 35 and 40 the lists would be completely different. If you went back to that same city five years later and asked the question using the same age groups, the list would have altered again.
Using these exact same parameters, what would happen if you did the survey in three different cities? What would happen if you asked the question in London, New York and Nashville? It is doubtful that the lists would be even remotely similar.
What is "pop music"? If you asked this question to a hundred people of all different ages, backgrounds and cultures the answer would be different from each person.
There really does not seem to be a clear definition of what pop music is. People reading this might arguably contend that pop music is - music that is on the radio and has commercial appeal to anyone under the age of twenty. To counter this one could simply ask them what city they lived in? What is commercially appealing to a teen in the Midwest might not have any interest to one who lives in New York or to one in Sweden.
Ask them what radio station they listen to. If they are listening to a "country station", you might ask them if they thought that the music they were listening to had a wide appeal. There can certainly be no denying the commercial value of county singers like George Strait. He has sold over 68 million albums in the United States alone. Translate that into actual dollars and then figure in tours, royalties and other spin offs. You might even dare to ask the person how old they were when they started listening to his music. George really achieved success in 1981 and many of his fans were in their teens to early twenties.
Is George Strait a pop music star? According to the definition provided by the country listener the answer would be yes.
What is pop music? The term has too many meanings to have a clear and concise definition. Its interpretations are as different as the music it is trying to define.

My Own James Taylor Music Appreciation Society

For a man who has gone through depression and drug addiction, divorce twice, serious personal injury (after a 1969 motorcycle accident in Martha's Vineyard) and family bereavement (with the loss of his brother Alex in 1993), it is astonishing that James Taylor's life in music has been largely an expression of sensitivity, hope and compassion - not of self-pity, anger or blind hostility. For these reasons alone, I appreciate James Taylor music so much.
I've loved James' voice ever since I can first recall hearing Handyman on UK national radio back in 1977 (I was unaware of him prior to then). It was no surprise that he received a Grammy that year for this record, in the category of Best Male Pop Vocal performance; his style was so natural, soulful and relaxed. His delivery appeared to epitomise the word 'effortless'.
Like some 20 million others since, my principal entry point into James' career came via his Greatest Hits album, first released back in 1976 and co-produced by none other than Peter Asher, who'd been at the helm of his first album for The Beatles' Apple label back in 1969. Prior to then, Peter had known Danny Kortchmar, an old friend of James' who'd collaborated on early live performances with him, back in New York, and it was Kortchmar who helped to facilitate a meeting with Asher for the fledgling star, once he'd reached London in the late 60's. When James subsequently left the somewhat chaotic Apple label and began recording for Warner Brothers, Asher became James' manager whilst continuing with his production duties. Fast forward six years or so and the Greatest Hits package appears, containing excellent re-recordings of songs such as Something In The Way She Moves and Carolina In My Mind. A myriad of session men also convened to add their various contributions to the project - luminaries such as David Crosby and Graham Nash, Michael Brecker and.....would you believe, Danny Kortchmar! The album should be an integral part of anyone's record collection.
From there I progressed to other long players such as Sweet Baby James - the title track being one of my all-time favourite songs - Gorilla and In The Pocket, the latter containing the perennially uplifting Shower The People. Deservedly inducted in to the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame in 2000, James' career is now as strong as it's ever been and his influence has been acknowledged by musicians as diverse as Bruce Springsteen, Alison Krauss and Bonnie Raitt. A truly gifted individual.
There's a guy I've discovered lately, who shows many similarities in his material to James Taylor music. His name is James Henry, a UK artist. You can get a download of James' song Saturday Morning for nothing, by clicking the link below - he is definitely worth checking out.
