This is the fourth part in a series about the best acoustic guitar songs ever written. Though obviously these songs are based on opinion, they represent the best the acoustic guitar has to offer. Enjoy.
1. More than Words - Extreme. This amazing acoustic song falls into the same category as Mr. Big's "To Be With You." It is a cheesy 80's song, but yet has clearly stood the test of time. The guitar is the highlight in this tune as the lyrics are corny and cliche and the vocals are nothing special considering the genre. The guitar is finger picked masterfully. It has an awesome rhythm and this cool slapping effect on the strings. It is a pretty difficult song too, which only adds credence that it belongs as one of the best acoustic songs.
2. Stairway to Heaven - Rodrigo y Gabriela (Originally by Led Zeppelin). - That's right, it made the list, but not in the fashion most people probably thought it would. Though Zeppelin was the band the penned the song, and Jimmy Page wrote the classic acoustic riff, I have to say the Rodrigo y Gabriela version is by far more impressive than the former. It is done in classic Mexican tejano style. The finger picking is fast and furious. The song features a rhythm guitar and Gabriela leading. It is mind-boggling to hear such a classic song done in such a different why. It is beautiful, it is rock, it is classical. It literally is everything. That is why Gabriela's, and not Zeppelin's, version of Stairway to Heaven deserves to make of this list of best acoustic songs.
3. The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel - One of my all-time favorite songs. The Boxer is heartbreaking tale about a young man lost in the big city and it was perfectly written by Paul Simon. The song pulls at the heartstrings of anyone who has ever felt lost or alone. The guitar in the song is the steady paced finger picked pattern that is soft, yet bold. It really ties the song together. The lyrics are about a young man who learns the hard way he cannot make it in New York City and has to retreat to the comforts of his home. Like I said, it is heartbreakingly sad, yet one of the most brilliant songs ever written by one of the most brilliant musicians ever.
That's it for right now. Though some people would disagree with these lists, which is fine, I think most people can appreciate the fact that these songs truly stand apart when looking at the acoustic guitar work in them. They are all well deserving to be on the list of the best acoustic songs.
