Has the X Factor Bubble Burst?

For many talented pop star hopefuls, TV talent shows such as Pop Idol and X Factor are a priceless potential springboard to fame and riches, while for some of the less talented singers they can achieve notoriety from a short, talentless spell in the spotlight.
But have talent shows such as The X Factor lost their stranglehold over the Music World?
For many years now society as a whole have been obsessed with reality-based TV shows such as Big Brother and more recently "trash TV" shows such as Jersey Shore. But as more and more of these type of shows flood our TV screens, it appears that the general public are getting bored of this format, and shows like Big Brother and I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here have struggled to maintain viewing figures, often having to resort to desperate measures to keep viewers' interest.
While X Factor has maintained its' viewing figures over the years, the acts which have been successful in the show have generally been relatively unsuccessfully after the show ends. Even the shows' winners, with the exception of Leona Lewis and to a lesser extent Alexandra Burke, have failed to crack the tough UK market, and most have since been dropped from their record deals, fading back into obscurity. As well as the shows' winners, many of the finalists are often offered record deals, but only a small minority such as boy band JLS have had any real success.
Music fans, fed up with the show's constant domination of the coveted Christmas number one spot, hit back at The X Factor in 2009, driving sales for the expletive-heavy track Killing In the Name Of by Rage Against The Machine, with the purpose of preventing The winner from reaching the number one spot. Joe McElderry's winning song reached number one the week after Christmas, but the music fans had made their point. Joe McElderry then failed to achieve any kind of success afterwards, only his personal life keeping him in the spotlight.
The 2010 winner Matt Cardle had been one of the most overwhelming winners in the history of the show, topping the public vote almost every week. However, one year later, he has only one hit single to his name and has more or less faded into obscurity. A brief revival is imminent with the arrival of 2011's X Factor show, and most likely a live performance on the show, but his 15 minutes of fame appear to be coming towards an end.
Once their 15 minutes of fame come to an end, what can these X Factor finalists do as a career? Many choose a life as a Z-list celebrity, throwing themselves at photographers at any red carpet event in order to get an appearance in the tabloids. Others are forced to return to relative obscurity in the form of a 9-5 job, but can you imagine an X Factor winner turning up to work in your Office?
So what is in store for this year's X Factor champion? There will undoubtedly be a massive surge in interest surrounding all of the contestants, but will the interest come from the music industry, or just the tabloids? One thing is for sure; they should enjoy their 15 minutes of fame while it lasts.
