Indian Cinema, Making Inroads in the International Scene

India has been making inroads in the world cinema market over the past few years. Many films have employed technicians from Hollywood to give their films that international look and feel. The Hindi film industry is especially becoming increasingly popular in western countries. Many producers, not only in the north, but also in the south are trying to cash in on the increasing popularity of Indian films in the international market.
Indian cinema has recently seen an obsession with superhero stories. And producers have been increasingly striving to make their superhero films match international standards. In the south, the Rajnikanth starrrer 'Robot' was judged as being the most expensive film made in the country. The film's director, Shankar, employed some of the best technicians from Hollywood to provide the special effects for the film. Rajnikanth, who enjoys a rare popularity among Japanese audiences, struck it big time with 'Robot' becoming a huge success in its Tamil and Hindi dubbed versions.
Closely following 'Robot' are other superhero films, this time from the Hindi film industry. The Shah Rukh Khan starrer, 'Ra. One', is believed to topple 'Robot' as the most expensive film made in the country. And then there is the Hrithik Roshan starrer 'Krissh 2', a sequel to 'Krissh', yet another in a line of superhero films. Just like what was done with 'Robot', both these films are made with collaborators from Hollywood. David Benullo has been roped in from the moviemaking hotspot to write the script for 'Ra.One' and pop singer Akon has recorded a song for the film. Both 'Ra.One' and 'Krissh 2' intend to compete with the superhero genre of Hollywood films.
Besides hiring international technicians, many Hindi films have tried bringing in international stars for their films. The Brazilian supermodel Barbara Mori was roped in the previous year to co-star along with Hrithik Roshan in 'Kites'. The tactic, however, did not aid the film's success at the box office. An upcoming film with international collaboration is the Zoya Akthar directed 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. The film has an ensemble cast featuring Hrithik, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar in the male lead. The film is set in Spain and predictably, has a Spanish co-star Ariadna Cabrol, as one of the female leads and has cinematography by Carlos Catalan from Barcelona.
With increased collaboration with foreign technicians and actors, the Indian cinema, especially Hindi cinema, is trying to make its presence felt in the international scene. How far it can rival Hollywood is yet to be seen, as audiences are eager for the release of these films.
